Mercari’s New Fee Structure: What It Means for Resellers

As a reseller, staying informed about platform changes is crucial to running a successful business. Today, I want to share my personal thoughts on Mercari’s latest update to its fee structure, followed by an official breakdown of the changes.

My Perspective on Mercari’s Competitive Fee Structure

Mercari remains a competitive option among reselling platforms, and this latest fee adjustment further solidifies its value. Personally, I’m pleased with this change because it alleviates the burden previously placed entirely on buyers. While I believe sellers should bear the entirety of the platform fees, this shift is a step in the right direction.

I hope this update will lead to increased sales, as a more balanced fee structure could make items more appealing to buyers. In 2024, I completed 176 sales on Mercari, making it my third-best platform after eBay and Poshmark. Although Mercari accounts for less than 10% of my total sales, it’s still a valuable channel worth maintaining.

Official Update: Mercari’s New Fee Structure

Effective January 6, 2025, Mercari is implementing a new fee structure:

Why the Change?

Mercari’s previous fee model aimed to make selling more accessible by charging all fees to buyers. While this allowed sellers to keep 100% of their proceeds, it made items less affordable for buyers, resulting in fewer transactions. This change reflects feedback from the community and aims to better serve both buyers and sellers while driving more activity on the platform.

New Fee Structure Overview:
  • Sellers: A flat 10% selling fee on the completed item price and buyer-paid shipping.

  • Buyers: A flat 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the completed item price and buyer-paid shipping.

Key Details for Sellers:
  • The 10% selling fee applies to completed transactions, including buyer-paid shipping.

  • The ACH direct deposit fee for withdrawals is being removed (limited to one free withdrawal per day).

Key Details for Buyers:

The 3.6% Buyer Protection fee supports:

  • Cancellation and refund policies.

  • Returns on qualifying items.

  • 24/7 customer support.

  • Trusted transactions.

  • No additional payment processing fee.

Implementation Timeline:

The new fee structure will apply to all new and updated listings starting January 6, 2025. It may take up to one week to reflect across existing listings. To ease the transition, sellers will soon have the option to adjust listing prices in bulk to maintain earnings.

Final Thoughts

Mercari’s new fee structure reflects a balanced approach to improving the buying and selling experience. This update aims to drive more sales and strengthen the community by addressing previous challenges. Whether you’re a casual seller or a seasoned reseller, this platform remains a worthwhile option to include in your strategy.

Thank you for being a part of the reselling community. Let’s keep thriving in 2025 and beyond!
